US Govt Asked To Prevent NSG Members From Continuing N-Trade If India Tests

IN A development that is sure to raise the Opposition’s decibel levels against the nuclear deal, the US Senate foreign relations committee has attached an enabling resolution with the 123 Agreement asking the US to `prevent’ other Nuclear Suppliers Group members from continuing nuclear cooperation with India in the event of a nuclear test. The resolution adopted by the senate foreign relations committee said “...it is the policy of the US to seek to prevent the transfer to India of nuclear equipment, materials, or technology from other participating governments in the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) or from any other source.”

The resolution further said that such a contingency would crop up if nuclear commerce between India and the US is suspended or terminated as per provisions of the Hyde Act, the Atomic Energy Act or any other US law. This basically means that if India were to test or other circumstances were to crop up violating US laws, the US would actively engage other NSG countries to stop nuclear commerce with India.

Even though the contents of the resolution further reveal glaring discrepancies between the American and Indian reading of key issues related to the deal, the government is likely to stick to the stand that the resolution is not part of the 123 Agreement and that India will solely be guided by provisions of the bilateral agreement. But the latest addition to the nuclear deal package is set to create political problems for the government and increase opposition to the nuclear deal.

Another addition to the package is an assertion that the nuclear deal would be subject to provisions of the Hyde Act, Atomic Energy Act and other US laws. Under the Rule of Construction, the bill said that nothing in the agreement shall be construed to supersede the legal requirements of the Hyde Act or the Atomic Energy Act of 1954. This again flies in the face of the government’s repeated assertions that the 123 Agreement supersedes the Hyde Act.

The bill further said that the president shall certify to Congress that the implementation of the agreement is consistent with the obligation of the US under various non-proliferation treaties. It also requires the Congress to urge the Indian government to sign an ‘Additional Protocol’ with IAEA as soon as possible.

As the Bush administration goes about the process of getting Congressional approval, the government has been on the defensive, trying to explain away discrepancies on key issues like fuel supply guarantees and nuclear testing. It started with a US state department note to the house foreign affairs committee that said fuel supplies would stop immediately if India conducts a nuclear test.

This was followed by Mr Bush’s assertions to Congress that fuel supply guarantees were not legally binding on the US and that the 123 Agreement was a political framework agreement and not a legally binding document.

Sautéed Bananas With Spiced Yogurt Topping

Makes 4 servings

This is best made with firm yellow bananas. They should not be green or they won't have full flavor, and they shouldn't be speckled with brown or they'll be too soft. This is our light take on the classic dessert Bananas Foster.

Ingredients:

Topping2/3 cup light vanilla yogurt

Pinch of ground cinnamon

Pinch of ground ginger

Pinch of ground nutmeg

Bananas4 small ripe bananas

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1 tablespoon dark brown sugar

2 tablespoons orange juice

Instructions

To make the topping:In a small bowl, mix the yogurt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg.

To make the bananas:Peel the bananas and cut them in half crosswise and then lengthwise to make 16 pieces. Cut out any brown spots. Melt the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.

Add the bananas cut side down and cook without turning for 3 to 4 minutes, or until golden. Turn, sprinkle with the brown sugar, and cook for 1 minute. Drizzle the orange juice into the pan and over the bananas.

Cook, shaking the pan to mix the orange juice with the pan drippings, for 1 to 2 minutes more, until the bananas are lightly browned on the underside.

With a spatula, remove the bananas from the pan, placing 4 pieces each on 4 dessert plates. Spoon the pan juices over and top each with some of the spiced yogurt.

Serve right away.

1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 packet(s) sugar substitute, heat-stable
1 1/2 ounce(s) milkshake mix, chocolate, diet

Preparation
1. Combine cake ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
2. Spray jelly roll pan with nonstick cooking spray. Pour mixture into pan and spread to corners. Cook at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes.
3. Let stand 1-2 minutes. Remove from pan and cool. Prepare filling. These are the last three ingredients.
4. Blend filling ingredients. Spread on cake and roll up.
5. Wrap in foil and refrigerate or cut in slices and serve immediately. Serve on dessert plates plain or topped with sliced fruit or a fruit sauce.

* 1/2 cup(s) broth, chicken, fat skimmed from top
* 1/2 lemon, juice only

* 1 tablespoon parsley, fresh, chopped

Preparation

1. Mix pepper, salt, and flour. Coat chicken with seasoned flour.
2. In a heavy-bottomed skillet, heat oil. Place chicken breasts in skillet and brown on both sides. Remove chicken from skillet and set aside.
3. Add wine to the skillet and stir until heated. Stir in juice, stock, and mushrooms. Reduce heat and cook for about 10 minutes until the sauce is partially reduced.

History :

The story of Aradhna must begin with a brief account of another band formed by Chris Hale and some of his friends from India, in December 1991. For almost eight years the fusion band Olio toured India, traveling in their bus from the northern Himalayan foothills to the southern tip of Kerala, and from Manipur on the borders of Burma to Amritsar in the west. During this time, Chris began studying sitar in Lucknow, continuing a passion that had begun in boarding school. In addition to Olio's rock repertoire, the band performed South Asian devotional songs called bhajans, and their first album Naam Leo Re (1997) was entirely in Hindi. Later that year, American guitarist and vocalist Pete Hicks returned to India, the land of his birth, to join the band.

Olio concluded its final tour in Punjab in 1999, at which point Chris left India for the U.K. to research the Asian music scene, reuniting with Pete in London. They landed a few gigs in the British Asian community and began arranging some bhajans that Chris had learned while in India. A new project was beginning to take shape.

Because Chris had been living in South Asia from childhood and could speak Nepali and Hindi fluently, he often felt torn between his eastern and western spiritual identity. He longed for an Indian expression of devotion to Yeshu Khrist, the North Indian name for Jesus Christ. In the course of this search, he had found Yeshu bhaktas (devotees) in different parts of the world who expressed their adoration through bhajans and the Indian way of bhakti (devotion).

In the spring of 2000, Chris and Pete returned to the U.S. to record their debut album, Deep Jale 2 (Light the Lamp), under the name Aradhna, which means "adoration" in Hindi. This soulful collection of bhajans was enthusiastically embraced by Indians and Westerners alike.

Travis McAfee began working with Aradhna during the recording of that first album, adding the bass to the blend of sitar and guitar. Interestingly, he too had spent part of his childhood drifting in and out of Asian ports with his family, and had an instant rapport with Chris and Pete. The three of them released the album in the U.K. over the course of a three-month tour.

Since then, Aradhna has performed numerous times in India and returned often to Great Britain. The band has also followed the trail of the Indian Diaspora around the world, performing in South Africa and the remote regions of Guyana and Suriname in South America where East Indians have lived for over a century. Aradhna has toured extensively in the U.S. and Canada as well. In 2002, they released their second studio album, Marga Darshan (Path of Vision), recorded over nine months in America and India. Their latest album, Satsang (Gathering of Truth), is a live recording of a concert in Southampton, England.

The last few years have seen the band go through many personal changes. Pete Hicks married Fiona Lyth of the Lake District, England, who plays Hindustani violin for Aradhna. They currently reside in Cincinnati, Ohio. Travis married long time friend and love, Liz Arts, a massage therapist from Georgia. They too live in Cincinnati. Travis and Pete sometimes work together performing Pete's own solo material from his debut album Until We See (2004). His website is www.peterhicks.net. Kenadie Jourdin-Bromley weighed 2 lbs, 8 ounces when she was born in February 2003. She was not expected to live more than a day, but she has survived. She continued to defy doctors expectations and at the age of 8 months, Kenadie was finally diagnosed with primordial dwarfism, a genetic condition that is believed to affect only about 100 people in the world. She isn't expected to grow past about 30 inches or weigh more than 8 pounds.

Rev D G S Dinakaran was suffering from heart and kidney conditions. He was admitted to Appollo Hospital here on January 29.
The end came at 0630 hrs. Family members were at his bedside when he breathed his last.
His body was taken to the his residence at Jesus Call
for public homage. Rev Dinakaran was involved in the Jesus Calls Ministry for the past several years and a well-travelled man. Karunya Institute of Technologywas
his brain child.
Dr.D.G.S.Dhinakaran is the founder of the Jesus Calls Ministry. Born on July 1, 1935, he had a very tough life being torn by the ailments of poverty and agony of unemployment.
Unable to bear the agony of these problems, on February 11, 1955, Dr.D.G.S.Dhinakaran decided to put an end to his life. He started towards the nearest railway track in his village to throw himself before the speeding train when he was stopped by his uncle who introduced Jesus Christ.
He experienced a sudden wave of divine peace and hope, flood his heart. His mind was transformed and he returned home enlightened.
After this incident, things started happening in him supernaturally. There arose an unquenchable thirst in him to spend hours together poring over the life-transforming pages of eternal Truth - The Bible,
discovering secrets that could revolutionize human life. He spent hours talking to God and sought Him with all his heart.
Seven years of diligently seeking the Lord Jesus Christ!
On October 9, 1962, he tarried at the feet of the Lord Jesus in prayertill

Customer service, tech support...these days we outsource everything to India. So why not pregnancy? Here is a report on the growing number of Indian women willing to carry an American child.
The midday sun is ferociously hot outside the Akanksha Infertility Clinic, a scuffed concrete building in the small Indian city of Anand. Crammed into a single patch of shade by the gate, a stray cow and a family of beggars — caked so uniformly in dung-colored dust they resemble clay models — wait out the noontime heat.

Inside, the lobby is jammed with barefoot female patients in circus-bright saris. Nurses in white Indian tunics scuttle among them, hollering out names and brandishing medical files. The air smells faintly of sweat and damp cement. On the walls, blurry photos of babies and newspaper clippings celebrate the clinic's raison d'être: "The Cradle of the World" declares one headline.
In this case, the metaphor is also literal. The Akanksha clinic is at the forefront of India's booming trade in so-called reproductive tourism — foreigners coming to the country for infertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization. The clinic's main draw, however, is its success using local women to have foreigners' babies. Surrogacy costs about $12,000 in India, including all medical expenses and the surrogate's fee. In the U.S., the same procedure can cost up to $70,000.
How surrogacy came to be so popular in the choking backwater of Anand, a dairy community with a population of 150,000 in India's western state of Gujarat, is a long story. The short answer is Dr. Nayna Patel, 47, the clinic's director. A charismatic woman with flowing hair and a toothpaste-commercial smile, Patel single-handedly put Anand on the map when, in 2003, she orchestrated the surrogacy of a local woman who wanted to "lend" her womb to her U.K.-based daughter.
The woman gave birth to test-tube twins — her own genetic grandchildren — and the event made headlines worldwide. Afterward, Patel was inundated with requests for surrogacy. She now has 45 surrogate mothers on her books, mostly impoverished women from nearby villages. Twenty-seven of them are currently pregnant, and each will be paid between $5,000 and $7,000 — the equivalent to upwards of 10 years' salary for rural Indians. More than 50 babies have been born at the clinic in the past three years, half to Westerners or Indians living overseas.
Another example of third-world exploitation? Globalization gone mad? The system certainly lends itself to the criticism that foreign women unwilling or unable to pay high Western fees happily exploit poor women at a tenth of the price it would cost back home. The system also avoids the legal red tape and ill-defined surrogacy laws women face in the U.S. (Not to mention that India, unlike some developing countries, has a fairly advanced medical system and doctors who speak English.) Or is it a mutually beneficial relationship? Indian surrogacy is already a $445-million-a-year business

We don't live where we did when you left home. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen 20 miles from home, so we moved 20 miles.

I wont be able to send the address as the last Sardar who stayed here took the house numbers with them for their new house so they would not have to change their address. Hopefully by next week we will be able to bring our earlier address plate here, so that our address will remain same too.

This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine, situated right above the commode. I'm not sure it works. Last week I put in 3 shirts, pulled the chain and haven't seen them since.

The weather here isn't too bad. It rained only twice last week. The first time it rained for 3 days and second time for 4 days.

What did Jesus mean when He said, Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple?

First of all, from reviewing the above pertinent scriptures, it is clear that Jesus wanted His followers to understand that they each had a "cross" to carry that was uniquely each one’s own "cross". What did the word "cross" mean in the context that Jesus spoke? I have heard some Christians of today express the opinion that the word "cross"in this context is a symbol representing the myriads of trials, tribulations, and frustrations Christians must bear in their fleshly life. A common idea seems to be that if Christians bear up and accept the burdens of everyday life, especially unjust persecutions that sometimes arise, one will in the end be justly rewarded by the Lord for a job well done.

But this understanding scarcely accommodates the actual meaning of this word "cross." In Greek it meant a "stake", a big one, which was used by the Romans of the first century as a means of torturing criminals and putting them to death. The "stake" likely was made from a wooden tree-trunk with a cross piece fixed near the top; thus, to the Romans it was a "cross." The criminal who received a sentence of "crucifixion" was nailed to the "stake" and then the "stake" was set up vertically in the ground with the criminal hanging thereon, suspended by the nails through the flesh of his hands and feet. The criminal was left hanging from the "stake," undergoing hours of torture, until he died.

From Scripture we know that this is the way that Jesus was put to death. But, at the time that Jesus made the statement concerning His followers "carrying their own cross," He had not yet been crucified. No true follower of Jesus expected Him to be put to death in this way. Was there any prophecy in the Old Testament Scriptures foretelling the manner in which the Messiah would be put to death? If there was, it was veiled. So what were the listeners to the words of Jesus to understand by this statement, Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple?

The statement implies that people have a "cross", an instrument of death, to bear, and that they could only successfully deal with it by "taking it up" and following Jesus to become His disciple. I doubt that anyone fully understood this statement of Jesus at the time for it was not understood that such an instrument of death as a "cross" was to be involved in the lives of anyone, including even Jesus Himself. Apparently the first mention by Jesus of a "cross" being involved in the lives of His followers was, in part, a prophecy foretelling the manner of the substitutionary death that He Himself was to die for His followers. Later, after Jesus had ascended to heaven, the Apostles received guidance from the Holy Spirit to understand the full meaning of His death and the "cross" upon which He died. Although the statements concerning a person’s own "cross" were veiled at the time Jesus made them, they became clear as the prophecies contained in the statements were fulfilled, that is, when Jesus Himself was tortured and put to death upon the "cross" which rightfully belonged to His followers!

So what does the statement mean to followers of Jesus today? Was Jesus speaking to Christians today when He said, Let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me? Yes. His admonitions to His followers of the first century were almost always admonitions to His future followers as well. But what specifically does it mean to us today to take up one’s own cross? Surely it means far more than merely bearing up under the petty trying inconveniences of the fleshly life. My heart cries out that this is not what He meant by "cross"! To Jesus a cross was not a mere inconvenience of the fleshly life.. All of His fleshly life on earth Jesus bore in His mind the knowledge of the way His fleshly life would end, separated from God the Father, with His body nailed to a rugged wooden cross on which He would be tortured and die for sins not His own!

I must understand that the "cross" that He bore was not His own. IT WAS MINE! It was the horrible symbol of the future that Satan had in mind for ME, the symbol of the judgement for MY SINS! And Jesus willingly substituted Himself for ME and bore MY CROSS! If my judgement of death on my cross is to be cancelled in the substitutionary death of Jesus on my cross, I must take up my cross; that is, I must acknowledge my cross which is the righjteous judgement against me, and I must pursue Jesus as His disciple! That is the meaning of Jesus’ statement, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it."

To Carry One's Own Cross

The meaning of the word "cross" is "stake," an instrument on which criminals were put to death (crucified) by the Romans in the first century.

The meaning of the word "crucify" is "to crucify," to put to death on a stake or a cross.

Jesus said to His followers during His ministry on earth, "And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life shall lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake, shall find it." Matt. 10:38,39.

Jesus said, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it." Matt. 16:24,25.

And He (Jesus) was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me." Luke 9:23.

Jesus said, "Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple." Luke 14:27.

"And after they had mocked Him (Jesus), they ...... led Him away to crucify Him." Matt. 27:31.

"They took Jesus therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of the Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha." John 19:17.

Jesus sent Paul to preach .... "that the cross of Christ should not be made void. For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." 1 Cor. 1:17,18.

Paul said, "But may it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." Gal. 6:14.

Paul said, "Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, or of me His prisoner; but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel." (1st Timothy 1:8-10).

The writer of Hebrews said, "Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has set down at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1,2.

This verse can be understood/interpreted in various ways. God will not allow sufferings or temptations or troubles or test you beyond what you and I can bear. I personally many times said to the Lord..."Lord God no more I cant take it anymore." But as the years passed I have been able to bear a lot of troubles and when I look back and see what I had last year wasn't even big enough to be called a trouble and I cried out to God saying No More.

This reminds me of a story I read a long long time back.

A man was carrying his cross and he couldn't carry it and asked the Lord if he can have another cross as its too heavy and big for him. The Lord takes him to a dark room and opens the door and shows him the crosses that were in that room and he said you are free to pick any cross you wish . When the man looked around in the room he couldn't find any cross that was smaller than the one he was already carrying.

There once was a man who had nothing for his family to eat.
He had an old rifle and three bullets.
So, he decided that he would go out hunting and kill some wild game for dinner.As he went down the road, he saw a rabbit.

He shot at the rabbit and missed it.

The rabbit ran away.Then he saw a squirrel and fired a shot at the squirrel but missed it.

The squirrel disappeared into a hole in a cottonwood tree.As he went further, he saw a large wild "Tom" turkey in the tree, but he had only one bullet remaining.

A voice spoke to him and said,
"Pray first, aim high, and stay focused.

However, at the same time, he saw a deer which was a better kill.He brought the gun down and aimed at the deer. But, then he saw a rattlesnake between his legs about to bite him, so he naturally brought the gun down further to shoot the rattlesnake.Still, the voice said again to him,
"I said, 'Pray, Aim high, and Stay focused."

So, the man decided to listen to God's voice.He prayed, then aimed the gun high up in the tree, and shot the wild turkey.The bullet bounced off the turkey and killed the deer.The handle fell off the gun, hit the snake in the head, and killed it.

And, when the gun had gone off, it knocked him into a pond.When he stood up to look around,
he had fish in all his pockets, a dead deer, and a turkey for his family to eat.The snake (Satan) was dead simply because the man listened to God.

Moral of the story:

Pray first before you do anything, aim and shoot high in your goals, and stay focused on God.Never let others discourage you concerning your past.
The past is exactly that, "the past."Live every day one day at a time,
and remember that only God knows our future,
and that He will not put you through any more than you can bear.

Do not look to man for your blessings,
but look to the doors that only He has prepared in advance
for you in your favor.

Wait, be still, and patient: keep God first,
and everything else will follow.

One day the king and his friend (every situation he says "This is Good") were out on a hunting expedition. The friend would load and prepare the guns for the king. The friend had apparently done something wrong in preparing one of the guns, for after taking the gun from his friend, the king fired it and his thumb was blown off. Examining the situation the friend remarked as usual, "This is good!" To which the king replied, "No, this is NOT good!" and proceeded to send his friend to jail

1 year later, the king was hunting in an area that he should have known to stay clear of. Cannibals captured him and took him to their village. They tied his hands, stacked some wood, set up a stake and bound him to the stake

As they came near to set fire to the wood, they noticed that the king was missing a thumb. Being superstitious, they never ate anyone that was less than whole. So untying the king, they sent him on his way. As he returned home, he was reminded of the event that had taken his thumb and felt remorse for his treatment of his friend. He went immediately to the jail to speak with his friend. "You were right," he said, "it was good that my thumb was blown off." And he proceeded to tell the friend all that had just happened. "And so I am very sorry for sending you to jail for so long. It was bad for me to do this."

"No," his friend replied, "This is good!"

"What do you mean,This is good? How could it be good that I sent my friend to jail for a year?"

"If I had NOT been in jail, I would have been with you." "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose." Rom. 8:28

Situations may not always seem pleasant while we r in them, but the promise of God is clear. If we love Him and live our lives according to His precepts, even that which seems to be bleak and hopeless will be turned by God for His glory and our benefit.

When India gained independence, the country was lost in a world preoccupied with the destruction brought about by the Second World War. All of a sudden, we were responsible for everything we did. Piggy-backing on another country's mistakes would no longer work. The Indian National Congress in those days could effectively speak for the people of India, but it was not an elected body. There was not even a constitution to guide us.

The Indian Constituent Assembly met on December 9, 1946. The Assembly appointed a number of committees to report on the various aspects of the proposed constitution. The Indian Constitution was finalised with 395 Articles and eight Schedules, and was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949. The Indian Republic officially came into being on January 26, 1950. January 26 was not some random date picked out of the calendar. It was on this date in 1927, that the Indian National Congress, then fighting its non-violent war for freedom, voted for complete independence as against 'dominion status'. It was the date when members of the INC took the pledge to work towards a 'sovereign democratic republic' of India.

After the Constitution was written and adopted on November 1949, January 26 the following year was chosen as the day when India would finally arrive as a nation, complete with the lengthiest and the most detailed constitution in the world. With this, Republic Day became the most important day in the history of India. Indeed, India had become a geographical entity on August 15, 1947, but it was on January 26, 1950 that it became a nation in the true sense, with a constitution and elected representatives of the people.

CHICAGO - A new study gives the strongest evidence yet that obesity surgery can cure diabetes.

Patients who had surgery to reduce the size of their stomachs were five times more likely to see their diabetes disappear over the next two years than were patients who had standard diabetes care, according to Australian researchers.

Most of the surgery patients were able to stop taking diabetes drugs and achieve normal blood tests.

"It's the best therapy for diabetes that we have today, and it's very low risk," said the study's lead author, Dr. John Dixon of Monash University Medical School in Melbourne, Australia.

The patients had stomach band surgery, a procedure more common in Australia than in the United States, where gastric bypass surgery, or stomach stapling, predominates.

Gastric bypass is even more effective against diabetes, achieving remission in a matter of days or a month, said Dr. David Cummings, who wrote an accompanying editorial in the journal but was not involved in the study.

"We have traditionally considered diabetes to be a chronic, progressive disease," said Cummings of the University of Washington in Seattle. "But these operations really do represent a realistic hope for curing most patients."

Diabetes experts who read the study said surgery should be considered for some obese patients, but more research is needed to see how long results last and which patients benefit most. Surgery risks should be weighed against diabetes drug side effects and the long-term risks of diabetes itself, they said.

Experts generally agree that weight-loss surgery would never be appropriate for diabetics who are not obese, and current federal guidelines restrict the surgery to obese people.

The diabetes benefits of weight-loss surgery were known, but the Australian study in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association is the first of its kind to compare diabetes in patients randomly assigned to surgery or standard care. Scientists consider randomized studies to yield the highest-quality evidence.

The study involved 55 patients, so experts will be looking for results of larger experiments under way.

"Few studies really qualify as being a landmark study. This one is," said Dr. Philip Schauer, who was not involved in the Australian research but leads a Cleveland Clinic study that is recruiting 150 obese people with diabetes to compare two types of surgery and standard medical care.

"This opens an entirely new way of thinking about diabetes."

Obesity is a major risk factor for diabetes, and researchers are furiously pursuing reasons for the link as rates for both climb. What's known is that excess fat can cause the body's normal response to insulin to go haywire. Researchers are investigating insulin-regulating hormones released by fat and the role of fatty acids in the blood.

In the Australian study, all the patients were obese and had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during the past two years. Their average age was 47. Half the patients underwent a type of surgery called laparoscopic gastric banding, where an adjustable silicone cuff is installed around the upper stomach, limiting how much a person can eat.

Both groups lost weight over two years; the surgery patients lost 46 pounds on average, while the standard-care patients lost an average of 3 pounds.

Blood tests showed diabetes remission in 22 of the 29 surgery patients after two years. In the standard-care group, only four of the 26 patients achieved that goal. The patients who lost the most weight were the most likely to eliminate their diabetes.

Both patient groups learned about low-fat, high-fiber diets and were encouraged to exercise. Both groups could meet with a health professional every six weeks for two years.

The death rate for stomach band surgery, which can cost $17,000 to $20,000, is about 1 in 1,000. There were only minor complications in the study. Stomach stapling has a 2 percent death rate and costs $20,000 to $30,000.

In the United States, surgeons perform more than 100,000 obesity surgeries each year.

The American Diabetes Association is interested in the findings. The group revises its recommendations each fall, taking new research into account.

"There is a growing body of evidence that bariatric surgery is an effective tool for managing diabetes," said Dr. John Buse of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, the association's president for medicine and science.

"It's just a question of how effective is it, for what spectrum of patients, over what period of time and at what cost? Not all those questions have been answered yet."

Medical devices used in the study were provided by the manufacturers, but the companies had no say over the study's design or its findings, Dixon said.

Its amazing at the same time its unbelievable. Well seems like the tree grew itself around the bike . But how come the bike parts arent rusted . I am sure kerala is a humid place. Also if it was AP or hyderabad some one must have taken the bike parts long time back.

Tamil super-star Madhavan or Maddy, as he is lovingly called by his fans and co-stars, is currently in news for his game show ‘Deal Ya No Deal’ on Sony. Maddy is not new to TV as he has featured in popular Hindi serials like 'Saaya', 'Sea Hawks', 'Banegi Apni Baat' and 'Ghar Jamai'. In Bollywood he was last seen in ‘Ramji Londonwale’ released this year. He talks to Rachna Kanwar about why he chose to do a game-show, his experience of hosting it and also his ‘new daddy’ status.

Q. How did you decide on hosting a game-show and moving to the small screen after such a long gap?
I have never planned my journeys in terms of what I want to do next. This is something that just happened and it seemed like a really big challenge and very exciting. Apart from that it came with a tag line which said that it was the biggest game shows in the world. It was doing really well in the countries where it was launched so for me that was a challenge. Secondly, there was no script. It’s all impromptu. Third is the ability to see somebody’s life change in front of you forever. That’s something I didn’t want to miss.

Q. How do you think the channel decide on you?
Like I said everything in my life is not plotted, these guys asked me to come as a judge on ‘Fame Gurukul’. They got excited by whom and what I was and they approached me for this.

Q. Like you said it is the biggest game show in the world, what kind of response have you received so far?
It’s been extremely flattering. We didn’t expect the kind of TRPs we’ve been receiving from the first day itself. But by and large what’s been important is the number of people who have SMSed me and said that they love the show. Not just me, they like the format and the way the people are playing.

Q. Some people feel the rules are a bit complicated...
Some people are having a little complication understanding what the game show is all about. But it’s really simple. It’s going to take time. We’ve only aired six episodes. It’s been running for five years in places. So eventually they’ll all get it.

Q. Tell us about your experience of hosting the show, how is it for an actor to interact with live audience?
Most of the time people are awed by you. People blush and get self-conscious, which is fine. I am not a superstar so it’s not like how they are with Mr. Bachchan. With him they are awestruck which I would be too. Here it’s more like ‘hey, we like your work’ and the girls blush.

Q. And pay you compliments...
Ya, which is fine! (Laughs) The thing is that over a period of time the game show as such, takes away from everything else. Once they start playing the game they forget Madhavan and they forget themselves. The focus shifts. It’s the possibility of how their lives can change that really makes the difference. Some people come with problems, a kidney operation or they want to send their children somewhere or they have a complex that they didn’t have a good childhood, but they want to give it to their children. So it’s not just a 1 Crore of 50 Lakhs thing, it’s the ability to have all that you wished for in half an hour. And when that happens its ecstasy and when it doesn’t happen its agony. So at that time it doesn’t matter whether it’s a Madhavan or a Shah Rukh Khan who is sitting there, it’s their lives that are more important.

Chemical that improves memory and cures Loneliness

Social isolation makes people stressed out and forgetful, but soon a drug could cure this problem. Late last year, scientists isolated a brain enzyme that triggers the "loneliness" feelings during periods of solitude. Replenishing that enzyme in the brain could enhance memory and relieve stress when you're spending a lot of time by yourself working (or space traveling).
Researchers at the University of Illinois kept several mice in isolation from each other to see what chemical changes took place in their brains. Turns out the lonely mice experienced reduced levels of a brain enzyme that helps create a stress-relieving neurosteroid called allopregnanolone. A release from the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science, where the researchers' paper was published, explained:
Such alterations in the synthesis of allopregnanolone may account for the anxiety, aggression, and memory impairments that result from social isolation, the authors suggest.It's possible that boosting the enzyme that helps create allopregnanolone could relieve feelings of loneliness that trigger memory blocks. Or perhaps simply administering allopregnanolone would do it too. Either way, further research might uncover a drug that would make it possible for humans to undergo intensive periods of aloneness without going mad.
